Bishop David deFreese

The Rev. Dr. David L. deFreese serves as Bishop of the Nebraska Synod, ELCA. A graduate of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D. and Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, Bishop deFreese was ordained in 1982 at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church, Omaha. He served three Nebraska congregations: Christ Lutheran, Pierce, (1982-1986); Immanuel Lutheran, Bellevue, (1986-1993); and First Lutheran Church, Kearney, (1993-2000) until he was elected Bishop of the Nebraska Synod in June 2000. He was reelected to a second six-year term in June 2006. Bishop deFreese lives in Gretna.
The Synod
“We are about doing ministry together,” says Bishop David deFreese.
The synod is how we link up with other congregations, mission development sites, new and established ministries, our agencies and institutions, and the larger Church in this country and around the world.
The word synod means “walking together”–as we move along our spiritual journeys to see, tell, and reflect Christ’s love. More than 124,000 ELCA Lutherans belong to more than 260 congregations and mission sites in the state of Nebraska. The synod is actually every member of an ELCA congregation in this state, acting as a community.
