Adopt-a-Dispensary Program
Adopt -a- Dispensary
Zahanati Program
In the desperately poor country of Tanzania the most basic needs are often not met. Churches have steeped into fill these voids, especially in health care. Fully half the hospital care in the country is provided in church-related facilities and a number of programs are in place supporting these hospitals. The Northern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania operates three hospitals and more than 24 medical dispensaries which are like satellites surrounding these hospitals.
These dispensaries (known as zahanati in Swahili) are usually found in rural and often remote areas. In many locations they are the only source for medical care for the population.
They are utilized for trauma care and births, but also public health functions such as prenatal care, vaccinations, and health education. They can be the entry point for identification and treatment of HIV/AIDS and related complications.
For many people, these zahanati serve as a sign of the Cross–a tangible symbol of Christian care.
The Zahanati Program (Adopt-a-Dispensary Program) was created to pair individuals and congregations who wish offer support with specific dispensaries, concentrating on providing the medicines they need and which are a major cost of operations.
The Nebraska Synod administers the program through its global mission associate, Bob Kasworm of Alegent Health, who serves in Tanzania. This is a great way for congregations, Sunday schools, groups, and individuals looking for a meaningful connection to the mission in Tanzania.
All donations are welcome and put to good use. One hundred percent of financial gifts go to assist the dispensaries. There is no overhead. Especially valuable is a commitment for multiple years or one that can be spread over multiple years.
A DVD is available that will show you the terrain, the people, and the challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in Tanzania. To obtain a copy of this DVD or additional information, please contact the Rev. Martin Russell in the Nebraska Synod office (402.896.5311).
